First impression of Romania
Romanian Middle Age was a very tormented one. The Turks invaded Europe, conquering the Balkan Peninsula, and crossing the Danube they entered in Wallachia, a Romanian state North the Danube River. In the mountains it was easier to defend, that is why the fortresses and citadels were built at the foothill of Carpathian Mountains. The only modern castle in your itinerary is Peles Castle, built at the end of 19th century by the future king of Romania, Carol I, as his summer residence. Bran fortress was built by master masons of Brasov, according to the privilege granted to the town on November 19th, 1377, by Louis I d'Anjou, who was ruling of Transylvania at that time. Since the beginning of its existence, the fortress was endowed with a garrison of 'archers and ballistars'.
